The question: Why do plastic milk cartons have that dent in them?

This plastic gallon milk carton from Kroger's has a circular dent in it for a variety of reasons.
You head to the grocery store to buy your milk for the week. Skim 1%, 2% or whole in gallons half gallons or pints line the shelves of the refrigerated section of your local grocery. But take a closer look at the gallon cartons, they have a huge dent in the side of them! Why?
Hey! They’re stealing my milk! Right?
Well, not really.
The carton still has a gallon in it, so don’t worry about being short changed for your milk needs. There are a couple different reasons why your huge plastic behemoth of milk has a pretty circular hole on the side of it.
You know the phrase “You shouldn’t cry over spilled milk”? Well ingenious milk engineers have decided that there shouldn’t ever be spilled milk if you have a gallon carton. That dimple is first and foremost a precaution against a milk catastrophe if you drop the jug.
Instead of that colorful twist cap popping off if you drop it, instead the dimple is designed to pop out to relieve the pressure from dropping the carton.
The new carton design is environmentally and cost friendly! Sam’s Club says that the design cuts 10-20% of its costs of manufacturing and bottling the milk.
The new design allows for easier shipping! Because the dimples relieve pressure, less packaging material is needed, and less cleanup is required because less milk spills!
So next time you see that dimple on the side of your gallon carton of milk, fear not! Its there to protect you, not steal your milk!
Thanks for the question!
