LOST: Television’s Greatest Mystery

The question: As per a Facebook poll, what is the island exactly? Is it Heaven, Purgatory or just a result of extremely bad luck?

As the JJ Abram’s science fiction television program enters it final season, questions still remain, even in the most basic of categories, such as, what exactly is the island?

The shows executive producers, Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse (known affectionately together as “Darlton”), host a weekly podcast during the seasonal runs of new Lost episodes, in which they answer and discuss questions exactly like this. In five seasons of podcasts, Darlton have addressed this issue exactly, and although they didn’t give much away, they have insisted that the island IS NOT Purgatory and further, that the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 are NOT dead.

These two facts lead one to believe that although the series focuses on a variety of supernatural themes, including reincarnation and time travel, there is no reason to think that the island we are viewing is a place of the living dead.

The truth is, as no one is completely sure where or what the island is, we can only hope that the final 17 episodes of LOST will answer all of the viewer’s questions.
